He proceeded to build this most magnificent wooden spiral staircase over a weekend. Upon completion, he vanished without discussion and without seeking to be paid. The staircase is an engineering marvel as no one can figure out how it was built or why it didn't fall under use. The staircase was used regularly for over 100 years until closed down recently. Historical photos show nearly 50 choir boys on the staircase at one time, an amazing image considering engineers believe even one person climbing it should cause its collapse as built. Not only are there no visible signs of fasteners or nails of any type, the wood used is of unknown variety and origin. If you ever have the chance, do visit the Loretto Chapel and witness an engineering miracle that is one of the most magnificent "man" built works of wood art in the world.
