It's aesthetically better to look through a stairway from the main part of the room, than to look directly up the stairway.

Any staircase with three or more steps should have a handrail going all the way up the open side. A good height for the handrail on a stairway is about thirty-four inches. Not only are there no visible signs of fasteners or nails of any type, the wood used is of unknown variety and origin.
